Board Circle Recruitment & Nomination Process

The mission of MSVW is to improve pregnancy and birth outcomes for communities of color in central Texas by providing education and support.

MSVW’s Board Circle plays a critical role in providing oversight, supporting horizontal governance, supporting fund development, and ensuring mission alignment.

MSVW is a worker self-directed nonprofit. This means it is a nonprofit organization in which all workers have the power to influence the programs in which they work, the conditions of their workplace, their own career paths, and the direction of the organization as a whole. Governance of the organization is administered through Circles, a process that distributes power and responsibility equitably across the organization. The Board is one such Circle with specific roles.

New and existing Board members have the potential to have a tremendous impact on the future of our city through our organization’s efforts to improve the reproductive health outcomes of people of color in Austin. The organization seeks Board Circle Members that share its values in achieving economic, racial, and gender justice by building solidarity that disrupts capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and institutional abuse through horizontal leadership and a focus on whole-body wellness.

Board Circle Responsibilities:

Each member of the Board Circle will agree to:

●Donate 10-12 hours per month of their time to support the organization;
● Meet for monthly board meetings (currently via Zoom);
● Attend at least 75% of all board meetings. Regular board meetings will be two hours long, with the exception of one longer planning retreat held annually;
● Join at least one other Circle that will meet in between regular board meetings to conduct Circle business;
● Support the Board Circle with fund development efforts year-round;
● Help oversee the organization's financial health and fulfillment of its mission, including fiduciary responsibility; and
● Serve a minimum three-year term, renewable up to a total of six years.
We seek individuals with experience in organizing, anti-racist and liberatory practices, conflict resolution, fundraising, law, technology, marketing and communications and/or financial management, and with a commitment to MSVW’s mission.

Mama Sana Vibrant Woman seeks to expand its Board Circle and add 3-4 new members during 2020 while maintaining an active, cohesive, and mission-focused body that supports the health and wellbeing of pregnant, birthing, and postpartum people of color in Austin. The Board Circle is especially and primarily interested in including the participation of Black people, other people of color, woman-identified, and trans/non-binary individuals.

Recruitment Process: Individuals who wish to join the board circle, or nominate someone else to join, should complete the below nomination form. Filling out the nomination form does not commit you or another person to joining the Board Circle. It’s simply a first step toward helping the MSVW Board Circle identify individuals who meet the criteria described above. Once we receive the forms, we will reach out to nominees to discuss the selection process and collect any additional information we need. Then, the Board Circle will select a slate of qualified candidates to invite for interviews.

There will be a “Virtual Happy Hour” on Friday, Oct 2 at 5 pm if you are interested in meeting current Board Members and select staff members to learn more about Board Circle participation. Please see our Facebook page for details.
