2022 Theme: What's an Ecosystem?
What is an Ecosystem anyway? An ecosystem from the dictionary is "a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment; or a complex network or interconnected system".

If the technical isn't speaking to you, try the literary! "Within the Ecosystem" for Portland Winter Lights Fest this year is inspired by this poem:

Within the ecosystem.

Sometimes we’re so close to something we can’t see it.
It’s so large we can’t comprehend or fully understand it.
So we look for secrets. We try to find the answers to puzzles that don’t exist.
Ask the stars, the heavens, seeking answers in magic or from words of the long dead.
Searching your whole life just to miss what’s right in front of your nose and under your feet.

There is magic and beauty is all around you.
You are in it, on it, swim in it and breathe it.
You just have to step back, and open your eyes.
It’s everywhere, life is everywhere.

This year we ask you to embrace life and this ecosystem.
All of it. From the smallest microbe, to the largest animal.
From the water we drink to the light of the sun that warms our planet.
We ask you to see your place among everything.

Because
We are lucky
To be here now.
Together.
On this wonderful living world.
