Sports and Data Analytics Event Interest Survey
Mr. Dan Axman, Senior Sports Analytics Advisor with SAS Institute, Inc., and team will be presenting to students on Sports and Data Analytics on Wednesday, November 17th, 2021 at 5pm via Zoom. WCOB Room 240 is reserved if you would like to watch the Zoom presentation with a group on campus.

SESSION ABSTRACT:
Please join members from SAS, the leader in analytics for a discussion on how data and advanced analytics are creating game-changing results throughout the sports industry. This unplugged session will take a look at industry trends and how SAS is working within the sports industry across collegiate athletics, professional sports, and Olympic sports. Focus areas will include how data and analytics impact fan engagement and experience, revenue generation, recruiting, and helping teams and athletes gain competitive advantages on the playing field.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Dan Axman:
Dan Axman joined SAS, the global leader in advanced analytics in June 2019 to help sports organizations accelerate their analytics success.  As the sports industry looks to gain valuable insights from several data sources, Dan and the team at SAS are working to help sports organizations drive fan engagement and experience, help teams and athletes gain competitive advantages, and increase revenues across the organization including ticket sales, fundraising, club memberships, corporate sponsorships, merchandise, and food and beverage.

Over the past 24 years, Dan has served the sports and live event industry across a broad range of verticals including professional sports, collegiate athletics, event management, consulting, and technology.  After beginning his career as a Box Office Manager for the Florida Marlins and Miami Dolphins, Dan’s exposure to the business side of the sports and live events spans MLB, NFL, NBA, MiLB, University Athletics, Casinos, Museums, and high-profile events including Super Bowls, NCAA Football, Championships, the 1997 Florida Marlins World Series, Concerts, and Festivals.  Dan received his undergraduate degree from SUNY Plattsburgh and a Master’s degree in Sports and Business Administration from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida.

Bruce Mills:
Bruce Mills is a Principal Systems Engineer having joined SAS in 2009 after obtaining his MS in Analytics from North Carolina State University. Bruce specializes in machine learning and natural language processing. He has worked on numerous sports analytics projects in his tenure across basketball, football, hockey, and soccer. Some example projects Bruce has worked on include creating an NHL goalie model, working with the NBA tracking data, and helping build player projection models for the 2013 NFL draft.

Jennifer Pearson:
Jennifer Pearson is a Systems Engineer within the Global Customer Intelligence Practice at SAS and joined the company in 2020. Jennifer came to SAS from the digital ecommerce and marketing sector. Jennifer works with customers across several industries, providing technical expertise for SAS’s Customer Intelligence solution (CI360). She received her undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University in Business Administration and Marketing.
