Kol Hashanah is a medley of Jewish holiday programming, focusing on six festivals throughout the school year!
Through virtual or in-person experiences, we bring you a complete package of unique, Jewish holiday-themed, inquiry-based discussions and exciting hands-on art workshops, all inspired by worldwide museum collections! Appropriate masterpiece choices will always be utilized, enabling us to curate a cultural and meaningful experience for your students, while enhancing Judaic classroom themes. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
*Chanukah: L’hadlik Ner Shel Chanukah
An introduction to, and understanding of, the use of light in art. The works of Marc Chagall, John LaFarge, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Louis Comfort Tiffany will guide us through this study of light in architecture and decorative arts. Stained glass window workshop.
*Tu B’Shevat: Boreh P’ri HaEtz/Trees and Fruit in Art
We will enhance the sweet theme of Tu B’Shevat with a program on masterpieces of trees and their fruit. Artists include Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Paul Cezanne, and Roy Lichtenstein. Painting workshop.
* Purim: Masks and Costumes from Around he World
In the spirit of Purim, let’s “unveil” the ideas and images of worldwide masks and costumes. We will celebrate and understand our own festivities and traditions, while learning about those of diverse cultures. Maskmaking workshop
* Passover: K’ilu Yatzanu MiMitzrayim/The Art of Ancient Egypt
Let’s take a trip down the Nile River and make the Passover story come alive through ancient Egyptian art, architecture and decorative arts. Works from the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The British Museum, The Cairo Museum of Art, The Brooklyn Museum and The Oriental Institue will be explored. Egyptian painting worksop.
* Shavuot: Flowers in Art
The Midrash tells of a miracle that occurred in the desert when the Israelites arrived at Mount Sinai. The base of this mountain bloomed with beautiful flowers in anticipation of the giving of the Torah. Let’s learn about interesting flowers from around the world that are depicted in both classic and whimsical masterpieces. Artists include Vincent van Gogh, Mary Cassatt, Georgia O’Keefe, Andy Warhol, and Jeff Koons. Collage workshop
* Yom HaAtzmaut: Israel-Her Story through Art
Let’s delve into a discussion about the works of famous Israeli artists, including Anna Ticho, Leopold Krakauer, Jakob Steinhardt, Yitzhak Danziger, Marcel Janko and Josef Zaritsky. What influences did they bring with them from their own places of origin? How are these influences reflected in the the last 70+ years of Israeli art, including Israeli landscape, people, and history? Printing workshop
