Apply for the three-day teacher training institute on the Japanese American World War II experience from August 9-11, 2023 at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American History in Washington D.C.
This is a professional development opportunity to train elementary and middle school teachers on lessons and activities about Japanese American World War II experiences.
If your application is accepted, we will cover airfare, lodging, and meals during the training.
The training will focus on three key areas:
- Historical content about Japanese American WWII experiences and an introduction to online resources
- Lesson and teaching strategies based on two resources co-created by elementary and middle school teachers, "What was life like in camp?" and "What would you have done?"
- Visits to local sites, museum collections and guest speakers related to the Japanese American WWII experience.
The teacher training institute is presented by the National Veterans Network and Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and sponsored by the Department of Interior, National Park Service Japanese American Confinement Sites Grant Program.
