How Beer Became White and What's Next: A Discussion of the Book, "Beer and Racism"

Join us at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, for a conversation about findings from "Beer and Racism: How Beer Became White, Why It Matters, and the Movements to Change It." We'll talk about how the book came to be, what the authors learned, and what we can take away from it to enhance our reporting and understanding of the industry.

As a benefit to NAGBW members, the Guild will provide a 50% refund if you purchase the book to read ahead of our discussion. Please send a receipt to bryandroth@gmail.com for payment. You're also encouraged to read Ruvani De Silva's review of the book ahead of our discussion.

Our guests:
• Ruvani De Silva - A freelance writer with bylines in PorchDrinking, Craft Beer Austin, Hop Topic World, Good Beer Hunting, and more. She blogs about beer in Central Texas and beyond at Craft Beer Amethyst. Ruvani is an advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in beer and as a British South Asian person living in Texas, she brings a unique voice to the world of American craft beer.

• Nathaniel G. Chapman - Assistant professor of sociology in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at Arkansas Tech University, where he also serves as director of undergraduate research. Along with co-author of "Beer and Racism," he was also co-editor of "Untapped: Exploring the Cultural Dimensions of Craft Beer."

• David L. Brunsma - Professor of sociology at Virginia Tech and co-author of "Beer and Racism." His scholarship focuses on multiracial identity, school uniforms, critical sociology, race and racism, racial identity, whiteness, human rights, music and intersectionalities in both books and peer-reviewed journal articles. He is founding co-editor of the journal Sociology of Race and Ethnicity.
