DRP Spring 2020 Student Application Form
This is an application to be a student in the Directed Reading Program (DRP) at UT Austin during the Spring 2020 semester. Make sure you read the following details before applying:

The Directed Reading Program (DRP) is designed to pair undergraduate math students with graduate student mentors in order to undertake independent study projects in a mathematical topic of their choosing. Undergraduate students may apply for the DRP and, if accepted, will be assigned an appropriate mentor. We do our best to pair students and mentors who have similar mathematical interests.

Projects could be based on reading through a book or an article, but are not limited to such things. The goal is to cover material that isn't typically covered in a standard undergraduate math course. Mentors and students will choose their projects together  based on the student's interests.  More details about choosing a project will be provided after the program has started.

Requirements: The DRP student is required to have an hour-long weekly meeting with his or her mentor to discuss progress towards the goal of the project. Approximately four hours of independent work by the student is expected between meetings. At the end of the semester, the group of DRP participants will meet, and each DRP student will give a 10-25 minute presentation on the semester's work. By applying to participate in the DRP you commit to attending our kick-off event on Wednesday, February 5th at 6:30 pm and the full evening of student talks on Wednesday, April 29th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

What year are you in college? *
We're asking how many years you've been at UT, not how many credits you have.

What subject would you most like to do a project in? *
Note: the topics with the most mentors are Topology, Geometry, Analysis/Partial Differential Equations, and Probability.
If there is no available mentor for your first choice topic, what is your second choice topic? *
Note: the topics with the most mentors are Topology, Geometry, Analysis/Partial Differential Equations, and Probability.
If there is no available mentor in your first two subjects, what is your third choice topic? *
Note: the topics with the most mentors are Topology, Geometry, Analysis/Partial Differential Equations, and Probability.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about what math you would like to study?
This is not required, but if you have a particular project in mind or any other requests about subjects please make them here. Keep in mind that we sometimes have a hard time finding a mentor for students who are only interested in pursuing a specific project.
What college level math courses beyond calculus  have you previously taken? *
Required
What math courses are you taking at UT this semester? *
Required
What is your course load this semester? *
We are asking how many credit hours you are taking this semester.
Do you have any non-math experience that may be relevant to a subject you would like to study this semester?
For example, if you selected topics related to computer science, list any programming languages you are familiar with or computer science courses you have taken.
Is there a specific mentor that you would like to work with?  If so, tell us their name and whether you have worked with them before/for how long.
Most students will NOT have a specific mentor chosen yet. After all, it's our job to find you a mentor.  These requests are much more likely to be honored if this mentor also requests to work with you.
Have you participated in the DRP before? *
Have you ever applied before and not been accepted? *
Do you have any of the following dietary restrictions? *
This helps us order the correct quantities of food for the kick-off and symposium.

How did you learn about the DRP?
Are you graduating this semester? *
Required
Are you interested in attending graduate programs in mathematics after graduation? *
Is there anything else you would like us to know?
This can be logistic issues that don't fit anywhere else in the form, it can also be a personal note regarding why you think you would be a good fit for the DRP, or anything else we've failed to think of.
By signing here, I agree to (1) meet with my mentor every week for an hour to discuss the progress of the project; (2) spend at least four hours per week on independent work; (3) give a presentation on the project on April 29th;  (4) remain in communication with my mentor should any of my plans w.r.t. the DRP change   *
