Hickory Ridge 2023-2024 8th Grade Encore Registration
This form is for students who will be in 8th Grade during the 2023-24 school year. Eighth grade students have the opportunity to provide us feedback on the encore classes they are interested in.  

  • We cannot guarantee choices, but we do our best to accommodate preferences.  Schedule changes will not be allowed.
  • Choices will be prioritized with a 1 being your first choice, 2 being your second choice, and 3 being your third choice.  We cannot guarantee that all priorities will be met.  Course selections may change without notice. 
  • Health and PE are required by state law and students will be automatically placed in that quarter rotation.

All courses except band and advanced art are one semester each, you will be scheduled into two courses for your 8th grade year. If band or advanced art is selected, it will be the only encore class you will take in eighth grade.

Course Descriptions

Business – Exploring Business and Entrepreneurship -  In this course, students learn the principles of business and the concepts of entrepreneurship. A focus on the necessary characteristics for being an entrepreneur will aid students in developing their career and life plan. Students learn the procedures and requirements for starting and running a business.

Spanish - This is an introduction to Hispanic Culture and language. Students will practice basic skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. They will have a brief overview of Hispanic culture, History/Culture of Latin American countries, as well as the Hispanic way of living. Students will participate in culture-inspiring activities and learn how to use Spanish in everyday life.  

Art- Students will explore the color wheel, works and styles of well-known artists, elements of design, artistic skills and techniques, and the use of different media in art.  They will create two-dimensional compositions (printmaking, printing, drawing, pastels) and 3-dimensional compositions (sculpture).  Students will experience the creative process and learn problem-solving skills to create their own works of art.  

Ceramic Art (Art prerequisite required)- In Ceramics students will explore basic hand-building and wheel-thrown processes. Students will gain an understanding for fundamental clay properties, tools, vocabulary and safety throughout the course of the semester.  All projects will incorporate a cultural connection or historical context as it relates to the field of ceramics.

Band - Divided into two sections: Woodwinds and Brass.

Beginning Band students will be matched to a specific instrument.  Students will learn to play and perform various styles of music, as well as learning how to maintain the quality of the instrument.   

Computer Discoveries III - is all about applying our knowledge. as we dig deeper into design – web design, app design, game design, CAD design and adding to the mix, robotics. We’ll put a more in-depth concentration into coding languages. This is also where we explore areas of Computer Science for finding solutions to real world problems. Our detailed look of career paths within Computer Science continues as we make many connections to all other industries. We’ll also focus on data and society, and the design process. Students will begin this semester with a look back at the content that is covered in both Computer Science Discovery I & II. Prior Computer Science and coding experience is not required for this course. Robotics plays a very important role in each of our Computer Science classes. We’ll learn to program a variety of bots to do a variety of incredible challenges. Again, our focus is solutions, so we'll get our robots to work to help us find solutions to so many real-world problems.

Exploring Apparel and Interior Design:

Students are introduced to the field of apparel with the elements of design, basic clothing construction, and the impact of marketing on clothing choices. Students also learn the basics of interior design, which includes the basic principles of design, managing living spaces, and learning how sustainable design impacts housing.
