Collaborative Learning: Strategies for effectively forming groups and implementing group assessment strategies

Date, Time, and Location: Monday, October 28th from 1:30pm-3pm in AIRB 1030

In this workshop, we will focus on collaborative learning in the classroom. Core tenets of this workshop are identifying and understanding basic collaborative learning principles, practicing collaborative learning activities, and addressing how to get students to "buy-in" to collaborative learning. If you come to this workshop, you can expect to leave with concrete skills and activities to directly implement into your classroom!

Active Learning: How to flip your class successfully and cover the same material
Facilitator: Mariana Junqueira, Pedagogical Fellow

Date, Time, and Location: Wednesday, November 6th from 12-1:30pm in AIRB 1030

The goals for this workshop are to introduce participants to Active Learning as an effective approach to teaching and learning, to model and discuss a variety of Active Learning strategies, and to tackle the dilemma of “covering content” versus promoting student engagement with the material. Participants can expect to come in contact with scientific articles on the topic and to engage with a range of examples of how to flip a class successfully by ensuring the achievement of desired Student Learning Outcomes.

Assessment: Bloom’s taxonomy: What is it and how should it factor into your assessment strategy
Facilitator: Alexander Sutherland, Pedagogical Fellow

Date, Time, and Location: Monday, November 25th from 1:30-3pm in AIRB 1030

This workshop is all about critically thinking about assessment in our courses. Some of the topics central to this workshop are Bloom's taxonomy, understanding the roles of formative and summative assessment, and how to effectively structure assessment so that students can flourish. If you come to this workshop, you can expect to leave with a better understanding of how assessment can be used to enhance student learning and with the ability to better structure assessment in your future courses!
