2023 Relicensure Series: Meeting the Needs of English Learners in Arts Classes
Perpich Center for Arts Education is hosting two virtual sessions of Meeting the Needs of English Learners in Arts Classes on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, the first from 4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. and second from 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.  

**The content is the same for both sessions, so plan to attend only one.**

Session Summary
This session will prepare you in creating an inclusive arts classroom for multilingual learners of varying backgrounds, skills, and language proficiencies. We will contextualize English learners as they are presented in policy and research, discover strategies and methods to foster an inclusive program, and share ideas on how to facilitate students in fully embracing arts education while recognizing their diverse experiences and histories. 

This session addresses English Learners, one of the required topics for renewal of Tier 3 and Tier 4 teaching licenses in Minnesota.

Presenter Bios
Our presenters are Abbey Leier-Murphy and Ethan Murphy. 

Abbey Leier-Murphy is presently an instructional designer at Tallahassee Community College. Abbey has a breadth of experience tutoring and teaching multilingual learners from a variety of age groups, most recently adult education and middle level in St. Paul. Her degrees include a Bachelor of Science in English Education From North Dakota State University and a Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language from St. Cloud State University.

Ethan Murphy is a current graduate assistant at Florida State University, seeking a PhD in Music Education and Choral Conducting. Ethan formerly taught high school choir in Northern Virginia where he developed a strong choral culture of inclusivity and high expectation among his ensembles. His degrees include a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from James Madison University and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Minnesota.

  • This is a virtual session. The Zoom link will be sent to participants via email on the day of the session.
  • This session will NOT be recorded for later viewing. 
  • Participants are encouraged to engage fully with video if at all possible. 
  • At the end of the session, participants will complete a brief evaluation form to receive the CEU.
  • There is no cost to participate.
