Here at the Pen Pal Initiative, we pair people who are currently incarcerated with people who can keep in touch and provide emotional and/or sometimes financial support. We’ve grown so much in so little time, and we know that it is because this is a labor of love. Not only have we created genuine connections but having the support of your community can make the reentry process easier to navigate. We’ve even helped dozens of our friends receive their stimulus checks and distributed mutual aid funds over the holidays. We know that our friends and family on the inside feel a wide range of emotions every day -- anger, fear, anxiety and often it’s kept bottled up inside. At the end of the day, we all need an outlet to express our feelings and need someone to talk to. Staying connected with our friends whose lives have been impacted by the prison industrial complex gives them the much-needed hope, inspiration, and validation that we all need.

We are working towards an abolitionist future, where liberation is accessible to all. Understanding that, we know how essential healing is, giving resources to those we advocate for, and most importantly allowing the space to exist in your humanhood to debunk the systemic ideology that it does not belong to you. This is rooted in radical love, care, and compassion. It’s impossible to do the work on the outside without hearing directly from the voices that are impacted on the inside. So we hope this program gives incarcerated people the love they so rightfully deserve, and also that it affirms there are folks fighting for them.

Love and Solidarity,

Jetzi and Alycia xox
