Introduction

Hello,

My name is JaRon Gilchrist studying interpreting research in my master's program in the Department of Interpretation and Translation at Gallaudet University. I am conducting a research study that explores ASL-English interpreters' perspectives on professional clothing and appearance. I would be honored if you considered being a part of this study. This study aims to foster the professional growth and instruction for experienced interpreters, novice interpreters, and  students in interpreting training programs.

Survey Requirements

  • Complete a Survey (15-20 minutes) 

  • Participate in a Focus Group if interested. (2 hours)


    Compensation


    Participants in the focus group study will receive a $25 Amazon gift card.


    Language:


    The survey will be presented in written English. Spoken English will be used in the focus group.


    Risk:


    There are no potential risks to participation; however, some individuals may share experiences that could be upsetting. To minimize this, as part of focus group participation, individuals will have to agree to maintaining a safe space.


    Benefits:


    Your participation in this study will add to the existing body of research on American Sign Language-English interpreters and may contribute to the further growth of quality instruction and training of ASL-English interpreters.


    Confidentiality:


    The use of pseudonyms in presentations and publications protects the identity of interpreters that share personal experiences within the safe space of the focus group. Agreeing to partake in this safe space at the beginning of the study means they will agree to the confidential nature of the space.


    Additionally, all data collected from this study will be under the strict stewardship of the researcher and stored in a safe, secure, password-protected cloud storage system only accessible to the researcher.


    Voluntary 


    Participation in this study is entirely voluntary. At any time, you can withdraw from the study without retaliation or any negative impact on your relationship with Gallaudet University, the Department of Interpretation and Translation, or the researcher, JaRon Gilchrist.


    Results:


    Results will be shared via an ASL presentation open to the community once the research study is complete. I will also collect email addresses of participants who would like a copy of the final research paper upon its completion.
