Year 9-10 Winter Sports Options for Wednesday afternoons (2.30pm-4.30pm approx.):  Terms 2/3, 2020
Year 9-10 Friday Basketball

*Covid-19 Considerations
With the unknown factors due to Covid-19, we can’t be sure what Winter Sport holds for 2020 but we will go ahead at this stage to work out teams etc. Sport on Wednesday afternoons and Friday Basketball may or may not happen in Term 2 or may be shortened to only happen in Term 3.

Year 9 and 10 Wednesday Winter Sports and Friday Basketball for Term 2/3 2020

The Secondary Schools’ winter sports competition begins on Wednesday 13th May (Basketball on Friday 10th May) and concludes on Wednesday 21st August (B-Ball 23rd). As with summer sport, this is optional for all Year 9 and 10 pupils. However, we would encourage participation from as many as possible because of all the benefits that playing sport brings – both physical and social.

In most cases games will start at 3-15pm. Depending on the length of the game and location played, the time that pupils will be back at school can vary quite a lot. A draw comes out every Monday that will help with determining approximate return times. Basketball games are on Fridays and usually at our gym at 4pm or 5pm starts.

The sports we are offering are: netball, football, 6 a side mixed hockey, table tennis and badminton (table tennis and badminton players will usually need to arrange their own transport). There is also a cycling competition at Tai Tapu every Wednesday.  Please indicate your first and second choice below. Basketball is also available separately. This is played on a Friday afternoon after school in our gym or at other schools.

The sports we play, and number of teams we have participating, will ultimately depend on the numbers wanting to play and the availability of coaches. In some cases trials may be necessary to determine the make-up of a team. If there is interest in rugby, we will contact other schools/clubs. If you would like to know any more about the different sports you can go to the website www.canterbury.schoolsport.org.nz

There will be a minimal cost (a maximum of $25). This is to cover the cost of team entry into the competition, any uniform costs, and petrol for the vans. Basketball fees are higher and will be advised. In 2020 the cost may be covered by the Board of Trustees (to be confirmed).

We are always grateful for (and rely on) parent help and support.  If you can assist with coaching a team, or providing transport, can you please fill in the form below. If you have any questions please email Mr Genet at r.genet@hillview.school.nz or Mr Norton at p.norton@hillview.school.nz
