KENOCHORIC Consortium Registration
KENOCHORIC is a forthcoming consortium-funded work for brass quintet by Eris DeJarnett. The finished piece will be presented in three to five movements for a total run time somewhere between twelve and twenty minutes (depending on number and duration of movements in the final draft). Thematically, the ensemble will use a variety of techniques and notations (both traditional and newer) to weave through explorations of liminal spaces, exploring the self, background noise, framings beyond "masculine" and "feminine," the permanency of realization, darkness as a state of possibility rather than a state of fear, emptiness, and the selves we find in the quiet.

Ultimately, KENOCHORIC will ask the quintet to reorient their artistic minds to consider: how might the ensemble make compelling music while working beyond the parameters of traditional quintet techniques? Eris' writing will be grounded in the work of long-influential brass writers including Ewald, Ewazen, and Berio as well as modern composers who have changed the way they look at and love brass playing: Catherine Lamb, Lainie Fefferman, Timothy McCormack, Michelle Lou, Adriana Hölszky, Mattie Barbier, Weston Olencki, and Nicholas Deyoe. As Eris writes the piece, consortium members will receive update emails that not only discuss compositional progress but also provide context to their brass writing and influences so that performers can more easily navigate the finished work.

After delivery of the piece, no later than June 30, 2023, all members will enjoy one year of exclusivity (through June 30, 2024) and will have access to a video introduction to the techniques and notations used in KENOCHORIC in addition to the detailed performance notes within the score itself. Matthew Onstad is the consortium lead for this project; his quintet will give the formal world premiere in Fall 2023. We also welcome preview performances for this project, if your concert date is earlier in the year.
