What is Para Ice Hockey? Para Ice Hockey (formerly known as Sledge Hockey) is an adapted version of stand up ice hockey. Participation in BC is open to both people with physical disabilities and people who are able bodied. Instead of skates, players sit in specially designed sleds. Players move around on the ice using two sticks, which have a spike-end for pushing and a blade-end for shooting. Upper body strength, core stability, and finger dexterity are necessary for full, independent participation in the sport. Adaptations such as push bars, anti tippers, chest straps, and higher backs on the sledges are available for those who may need the extra support.

Who is SportAbility? SportAbility BC is a non profit, disability sport organization. We strive to offer access to sport for British Columbians with physical disabilities from grassroot to high-performance levels. Sports under our mandate include Para Ice Hockey, Boccia, Powerchair Soccer, and Para Soccer. For more information about SportAbility, visit our website here: www.sportabilitybc.ca

Will you need to borrow equipment to participate in the session(s)? Please check all that apply. *
Required
Please list the size of the equipment you will need to loan. (ie. Large helmet, Medium padding, Large gloves)
Hip width if borrowing a sled (in inches). To measure, sit flat on the ground, thighs together, and stretch the measuring tape horizontally across your lap recording the width from the outside of your hips. If you use a wheelchair and know the seat size, submitting this works as well.
Do you have grip strength to hold the sticks and push yourself independently? *
Do you need a push bar and assistant? Push bars are used when the individual has difficulty gripping the sticks and/or strength to push themselves on the ice without assistance. Push bars attach to the back of the sled allowing an assistant on stand up skates to skate behind the participant, pushing them on the ice. *
Do you require a sled with a high back? High backs are used to help support people who may require more stability to sit upright in their sled (ie. if trunk stability or strength is affected). High backs are often incorporated with chest straps to help keep the participant upright.
