Dana How Scholars Mentor Application
We are elated that you are interested in becoming a mentor! The Dana How scholars program focuses on establishing relationships while having in-depth discussions on a myriad of topics (ranging from interpersonal relationships, college planning, money management) pertinent to today's youth. This is a fantastic way to pop the Penn bubble we all seem to get trapped in while making a difference in the lives of West Philly high school students.  As you will be forming close bonds with our scholars, it is important to understand the circumstances they come from.

School closings, reduced staff/resources and a variety of neighborhood risk factors — more often than not resulting directly from systemic, institutional injustices — have combined to cripple West Philadelphia’s education system, presenting significant challenges to youth development.

Penn’s Upward Bound works with low-income high school students from the surrounding area to help them succeed in school and prepare them to attend college. Our mentees are mostly 10th and 11th graders who have been identified by Upward Bound as students who would benefit greatly from working with a college mentor.

The Dana How Scholars (DHS) mentoring program is a federally funded partnership with Upward Bound, the Christian Association (CA) and the Dana How Social Services Fund of the Philadelphia Foundation. It is named after a former Executive Director of the CA, who operated the organization’s camps and settlement houses.

Application closes October 1st.
