Dear Nominator:
Upward Bound is a college access program funded by the U.S. Department of Education to serve 148 students. Upward Bound is designed to provide counseling, academic and supportive services to students who have the potential, but may lack the resources and/or motivation, to enter a postsecondary education program upon completion of high school. Admission is not automatic; students must complete a rigorous application and selection process.
Upward Bound looks for indications of the following characteristics or attributes to predict a student's academic potential and ability to succeed in postsecondary education:
1. Regular class attendance
2. Desire/expectation to finish high school
3. Participation in class
4. Reading and math skills no more than two years behind grade level
5. Involvement in extracurricular activities
6. An average GPA of 2.0 or better
7. Indicators of parental/guardian support and cooperation
8. Ability to complete a task and achieve a goal
