TOGETHER IN JESUS: FIRST RECONCILIATION:  In our lesson today, we are going to read a bible story about a man named Moses. First, we need to understand what was going on at the time of the story. Long ago, even before Jesus' time, God helped a man named Moses lead a group of slaves out of a land called Egypt. Slaves are people that are owned by others and have no rights or freedom. God wanted these slaves to become God's people and live together happily, but from the beginning, they had trouble. Let's turn to page 2 in your "Together in Jesus Lesson 2," and read the story "Slaves Become God's Own People." You will see that the story is set up as a play, so if you want to have your family take part in it, that would be great. You can also read all the parts yourself as well. Once you have finished the reading, please answer the questions below.
What worries or troubles do the people have? *
What problems does Moses have with the people? *
What do we call the rules that God gave to Moses and his people? *
You are a Superstar!! In this bible story, we learn that God gave Moses' people rules to live by. These rules are more than just a bunch of "do's and dont's," the Ten Commandments are God's loving guidelines for living a safe and happy life. By following them, we grow closer to God and to one another. Imagine how much happier Moses' people would have been if they had followed these rules on their journey. Abner would not have threatened to kill Reuben, Rebecca wouldn't have lied about her goat, and Dan would not have threatened people when they came near his goats. The Ten Commandments help you to learn right from wrong and guide you to make loving choices. In our next section, we are going to start learning about each of the Ten Commandments. In this lesson, we will be looking at The First Commandment.
LEARNING ABOUT THE TEN COMMANDMENTS - THE FIRST COMMANDMENT: Last week, you read about your "conscience" in your booklet. Your conscience helps you to know what is right and wrong. It is God's voice that speaks to you inside about what you should do and what you should not do. Examining, or taking a close look at, your conscience, is a way of seeing how well you are doing in following Jesus. To make what is called an "examination of conscience," you need to look at your behavior to see if there is anything you have done or have failed to do that offends God by breaking the rules he has given us. To find out if you have sinned, you can look at the Commandments and ask yourself questions about them. Let's start with the 1st Commandment by turning to page 5 in your booklet, and reading "The First Commandment." Then answer the questions below.
The First Commandment tells us that we should always put _________ first in our life. *
Fantastic job! The First Commandment reminds us that our love for God should be bigger than anything else in our lives. Jesus said, "You shall love the Lord, your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Luke 10:27). The questions that were listed on the First Commandment page will help you to see if you have failed to keep this commandment properly. By asking yourself these questions, it can help you to prepare for what you want to tell the priest when you go to confession. Over the next several lessons, we will be looking at each of the commandments, one at a time, to help you identify and ask the right questions as you prepare for your First Reconciliation. Now, take a moment to find your First Commandment sticker and place it in the circle on page 5.
Super great job! I want you to remember that "Reconciliation is a Celebration." It is a celebration of God's power to make all things new for us!! We will continue to learn more about this celebration as we continue our lessons!
