Xws7ámeshqen (Language) and Portraiture Project
Language Teacher and Project Leader: Gabe Port
Advisors: Jackie Ferry

Nów7 mekw'wát, hello everyone,

My name is Gabe Port. I am from the Quacadum/Wood family and I am the Multimedia Language Specialist at Samish. I've been a language learner for three years and an intermediate teacher for half that time. If you've attended a Culture Day language class over Teams, you've probably met me!

I am hosting a collection of seven (7) Xws7ámeshqen (Samish Language) classes during mid-September to the end of October 2023. The classes cover lineage, hobbies, childhood, storytelling, and the cultural significance of our language.

When: Weekday evenings, mid-September through late-October.
Where: Teams Meetings (online but students must live in driving distance to Seattle, WA)

In conjunction with the classes, I will interview individuals and photograph them to explore their Samish heritage. For example, it could be portrait of your hands, shoes, your cedar hat, or maybe you and your dog in your favorite hiking place. My hope is to share the diversity among Samish citizens and our resilience as a dispersed nation.

Please email me at gq.port@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.
