Actor Submissions- Crane Girl- One Night Only Festival
Crane Girl will be presented as a staged reading at the One Night Only Festival on June 10, 2023 at the Attic Studio and Theatre in Toronto. Crane Girl, inspired by true events, is a fictionalized exploration of what might cause a person to walk out of their carefully curated life and climb a crane. It follows Jane, a young married woman who, having witnessed a tragic event, suddenly finds herself feeling completely untethered. She can see no way out of the cage she has built around herself until she realizes she should not have been looking for a way out, she should have been looking for a way up. We are casting four performers to play a variety of roles. FYI: This performance will be a profit share production; therefore, revenue will be split equally among all involved artists.

AUDITIONS DUE MAY 3.

Falling Iguana is a theatre company that prides itself on creating original works of physical theatre. Though this is a staged reading and actors will have scripts in hand, heightened physicality/some movement will be incorporated throughout the performance. Movement experience is not required, but please indicate if you are comfortable experimenting with movement. Optional: please list any relevant movement experience/training.
This rehearsal process will be condensed, involving approx. four rehearsals based on performer availability, a one hour tech rehearsal on June 7 at 1 pm, and the performance on June 10 at 7 pm. Are you available for the tech rehearsal and performance dates? Are there any major scheduling conflicts we should know about between May 5 and June 10?
AUDITION: Please choose ONE of the following scenes for your self-tape audition. There are no restrictions on roles- so choose whichever monologue interests you the most. Memorization is not required. AUDITIONS ARE DUE MAY 3.

The conceit of this piece is that the entire production takes place on a structure of some kind. Every character Crane Girl interacts with exists somewhere on "the crane". In the staged reading, we will not be on a structure, but we will devise some movement that suggests the presence of "the crane". Given the nature of this piece, please find one (or more) moments in the scene to move up or down "the crane", whatever that means to you.

ROLE:
Jane: An unhappily married woman who witnesses a tragic event and consequently climbs a crane. Also called "Crane Girl".

MONOLOGUE:
Jane watches curiously as blood slowly bubbles out of her thumb. She touches the shard of glass but does not pull it out. She seems to have forgotten that Laura is there and speaks haltingly to herself.

Jane: Yeah…yeah I must have…dropped it on the curb this morning when I saw…when it…I mean…I guess I…saw something today. An accident? This woman was crossing the-at Bloor she was- and she...she wasn’t looking I guess because she was at the crosswalk, so she probably thought it was…and this guy in a, like a Nissan? Red Nissan. He just smacked into her- and, really fast, and he dragged her along the road. Maybe half a block. Until. And I could see her brown pony tail underneath the…she was small so the rest of her was caught under the…but there was a trail of red from the crosswalk to the main…and her hair poking out from the…so I could only see her pony tail…(she trails off)

Laura watches Jane apprehensively. She slowly takes Jane’s hand and pulls out the shard. She grips Jane’s thumb with her whole hand, applying pressure.
ROLE:
Kira: A neighbourhood gossip/dog mom who witnesses Jane on the crane. (This actor will also play the role of Laura, Jane's sister in law, and others).

MONOLOGUE:
Kira (pulling her hair into a tight ponytail): I guess it was about 4am? 3:45 maybe. I had to take Ray Donovan- that’s my Jack Russell Terrier- Ray Donovan- out to do his….well, to exercise his…to go potty. Donovan- that’s my husband- Donovan, he doesn’t like to take care of Ray in the morning hours, but Ray has recently developed some…some bladder control issues…that we- well, I- think has to do with the development of diabetes- dog diabetes. Donovan’s Aunt Carol has diabetes- human dia- and she didn’t develop it until her late 30s when she was going- was urinating- 4, 5, times a day….(seeing that she is losing the attention of the room) yes. So yes. I was out with Ray Donovan and he saw a squirrel- one of those fat, black squirrels with little patches missing from around its tail- and he, well you know Jack Russells- he started to run- needless to say, we ended up around the corner from our apartment just across the street from the crane at- at Church and Wellesley?- and, well at first I didn’t see anything, but once Ray had lost sight of the squirrel and proceeded to do his…to go potty…that’s when I noticed her.
ROLE:
Jon: A firefighter who answers the 911 call and climbs up after Jane. Jon is passionate about his work, but this particular call shatters his worldview. (This actor will also play additional roles, including Evan, Jane's husband).

MONOLOGUE:
Jon: I have no idea how she did it. I have no idea how this woman- excuse me- Mrs. Coleman climbed an entire crane with no wires, no cables, no gloves. According to her own statement, she started climbing at approximately 1:30am. We were able to bring her safely back to earth- alongside myself- just before 9am. How did she last that long with no…? How did she not slip? A call came into the station around 4am. A person later confirmed as Mrs. Jane Coleman- had been spotted near the top of the scaffolding of a crane located at Church and Wellesley. The witness- Kira Epson- reported that Mrs. Coleman appeared to be climbing quite quickly and was nearing the top of the scaffolding. That’s when we contacted Suicide Prevention. But… how did she not slip?
