Teacher Reference Form - 2022 WISEST Summer Research Program
*NOTE* We are planning to return to in-person placements for 2022.  However, with the continued uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 restrictions and variants, we are prepared to run the program virtually if needed.

Thank you!  You have been asked to provide a reference for a grade 11 student applying to participate in the WISEST Summer Research Program, a six week paid research position under the guidance and mentorship of the University of Alberta faculty members and graduate students. The program experience gives grade 11 students the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in university and builds their confidence to pursue fields where their gender is underrepresented.

WISEST's primary focus is on encouraging diversity and empowering women and gender minorities in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and math).  Both medicine and pharmacy are disciplines where females are generally well represented and there is not a lack of diversity in these fields.  So, although these are science-based careers, WISEST focuses on areas where true under-representation exists.  For females and gender minority students, this is non-medical sciences, engineering, technology, and math. WISEST does NOT do medical placements.

If you are unfamiliar with this program, please visit www.uab.ca/wisest for more information PRIOR to completing this reference form.

Each student is asked to have 2 teacher references submitted to support their application.

These forms need to be submitted by 11:59 pm on March 25, 2022.

We greatly value your perspective on the suitability and capability of a student to succeed in this program and take full advantage of the opportunity this presents.  Please consider the following as you complete this form:
-Would this student benefit from being introduced to less-traditional fields of study and diverse career options?
-Does this student have other opportunities or supports that would allow them to experience academic and university life?
-Is this student mature enough to be placed in a university research setting?

What does it take to succeed as a student in the WISEST program?
-Students are expected to commit to their summer experience with enthusiasm, have both the desire to learn and the drive to make the most of this unique opportunity.
-Students will demonstrate initiative and good communication skills, be able to adapt quickly to new situations and experiences, have the confidence to learn independently and the ability to work well in a team.
-Have at least an 85% overall average in their Grade 11 math and sciences courses, however, grades are NOT
considered once this minimum requirement is met.

Please note:
-Please set aside approximately 30 minutes to complete this form, Google Forms, unfortunately, does not allow you to save your progress, so you may wish to copy the questions into an alternate document to work on.

-Applications are reviewed by a small adjudication committee.  All portions of the application will be kept confidential within the committee.
