  • Practice Articles: Academic-style articles about how communities and scientists work together to do science that advances community priorities. Practice articles focus on our learning about the process of community science, not so much on the specific results. This can include case studies of community science projects, theoretical foundations for community science, and evidence-based or experience-tested practices for effective community science.
  • Review Articles: Broader overview of community science projects and practices. These will usually be solicited by the editors.
  • Project Reports: The products and results of community science projects. Reports covering projects at all scales are welcome as long as they clearly document community participation and benefit. We encourage these reports to generally inform the field of community science. We strongly encourage people who submit a project article to also submit a project report to the knowledge exchange, and to use that to make the work more accessible to non-researchers. The purpose of the project article type is to create a way for projects to report on not just their scientific results, but also community science practices that contributed those results.
  • Commentaries: Short, timely discussions of community science, including pieces that promote a culture for community science worldwide. This section of the journal is meant to provide a peer-reviewed venue for discussing the policies and practices that can advance community science or offer visions for the future of community science.
  • Community Science Exchange: Project descriptions, resources, news, or items of any other kind that you think may fall within our scope. Submissions are internally reviewed by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), and there is no cost to make a submission.
