This session will look at Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), tools that offer a code editor as well as a wide range of other features and tools to support and improve the efficiency of writing code. There are a huge range of ways that IDEs can help you in your software development work and many modern IDEs are actually advanced and flexible frameworks that can support a vast array of plugins and additional software development-related functionality. While IDEs can be great productivity enhancing tools, getting started with an IDE can often be a little daunting. If you don't make use the functionality available it can simply become a rather complicated text editor.

In this session will give you an overview of the range of key functions that IDEs can offer and show how they can help you improve your development processes and workflows. Following our regular session structure, will begin with a short presentation covering some background and then move into an interactive tutorial. We're allowing slightly longer than our regular 60 minutes for this session in order to provide a bit more detail.

Session prerequisites:
  • Visual Studio Code downloaded and installed (ideally the latest version). You can obtain it for Mac, Linux or Windows from https://code.visualstudio.com/download. Install it with all default settings, if prompted.
  • Python version 3.8 or above. Type 'python -v' at your shell prompt and press enter to see what version of Python is installed on your system. If you don't have Python installed on your system and require assistance with the installation, you can take a look at the instructions provided by The Carpentries for installing Python in preparation for undertaking their Python training module.

    • On macOS and Linux, a bash shell will be available by default.
    • On Linux you may need to use your system package manager to install git.
    • On Windows you can install Git for Windows to provide both Git and a bash shell.
    • Type 'git' and press enter at your shell prompt to check if git is installed. It should display 'usage: git …' followed by a set of help instructions.
