Earl (black male, 50s) An urban farmer and retired teacher who is happy to be alone among his beloved plants, happily keeping the world's dramas at an arm's distance. He has a larger than life personality combined with an artistic approach to gardening.
Simone (black female, teen) Earl’s niece, A precocious chatterbox and a constant purveyor of ideas, questions, news flashes, and new information from social media. Irritates Earl, but he loves her for it.
Professor Alex (white male, 30s or older) An IUN professor in the sciences, West Coast transplant. Has an encyclopedic knowledge of everything that he's always anxious to share.
