Parklets have appeared throughout cities everywhere during the pandemic, transforming urban space usually reserved for vehicles to provide spaces for cafes and restaurants to operate outdoors. These public spaces originated in Park(ing) Day, a tactical urbanism initiative that reclaimed parking spaces for picnics, outdoor play, exercise, art - anything and everything that could be placed on the street.
The RMIT Future Play Lab are calling for Expressions of Interest for activations of a playful parklet (
http://futureplaylab.io/urbancommons.html) in the Brunswick Design District. It could be a performance, a game, a workshop, a temporary installation, a permanent addition or modification of the parklet itself, or any combination of these that responds to one or more of project themes:
>>> urban commons: parklet as a new form of open-access, community-driven public space
>>> urban play: parklet as a site of disruption, reimagination or critique of rules of play
>>> urban playground: parklet affordances and structures that invite spontaneous, active play
The parklet will be installed at the Dawson end of Saxon Street close to the main entrance to Siteworks (
https://www.saxonstreet.com/) from Saturday March 19 to Wednesday April 13. The program will be launched at Melbourne Design Week in March.
Deadline for submissions is Monday February 28.
