Skill-building for the Next Movement: Reckoning with Place, Power, and the University
Friday, November 18th, 3:00pm-8:00pm, Olin Hall - Room # will be shared confirmed participants via email.
Trainer and facilitator: Dr. Winter Rae Schneider, co-founder, Accountable History Network
Workshop description: Just like historical actors and events, institutions like colleges and universities reflect the perils and possibilities of the contexts in which they were founded. In this workshop we will begin by thinking about how to define and reckon with harm in the context of colleges and universities whose roots are intertwined with historical structures of settler colonialism, racial capitalism, white supremacy, and hetero-patriarchy. We will then turn to contemporary case studies and analyze how legacies of structural violence show up in our colleges and universities in the present. Lastly, we will identify tools that feel relevant in creating transformative change from within sites of power and privilege. Topics discussed will include wins, losses and strategy from past and current student and coalitional movements, the ethics of organizing on and around campus, radical accountability to privilege, transformative and restorative justice, and elite capture.
