SCJEA Virtual Wake-Up Call 2020
This year's Wake-Up Call is being held virtually on Saturday Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Join us at SCJEA's virtual Wake-Up Call 2020 to pick up some new skills and tips to kickstart your student publications during this school year.

Our keynote speaker is Los Angeles Times reporter Erin B. Logan, who will discuss covering race and diversity.

Attendees will have two breakout sessions to choose from. We have a great list of presenters, including Los Angeles Times award-winning photographer Luis Sinco, USC professor Amara Aguilar who will share the latest trends in social media, Casey Mendoza of Newsy who will discuss pop culture coverage and Michael Hernandez, who will present on video storytelling.

We also have our own SCJEA board members presenting. Gary Metzker will share 21st century page design ideas, Gaby Doyle will present multi-media tools that will make your content more interactive and Jessica Young will discuss team building and ice breaker activities to create a community in your virtual classroom.

In a general session to everyone, JEA Student Press Rights Committee Director Kristen Taylor will present on the importance of student voice being a watchdog of those in power.

Here are the breakout sessions scheduled:

Social Media
Photography
21st Century Design
Broadcast/video
Multimedia tools
Interviewing and Reporting
Using Story Page Elements to Enhance Your SNO Site
Team-building activities
Switching from WordPress to SNO
Writing About Pop Culture
Adviser Roundtable

Don't forget to sign up for a critique. (The 20-minute slots will fill up quickly)

We will also award prizes for the best virtual background and best use of the First Amendment in a virtual background.

Registration for Wake-Up Call is $5 per person for members; $10 for non-members. If you need to renew your membership, the annual fee is $30. The money raised goes toward the student scholarships we award every spring.

Upon completion of this form, an invoice will be emailed to the adviser.  If you do not receive an invoice within two business days, please email socaljea@gmail.com. Checks should be made payable to SoCal JEA. (Due to distance learning, we understand most payments will be delayed).

Registration closes Sept. 24. Zoom links will be emailed to the adviser on Sept. 25.

To give us an idea of the number of attendees for each session, please check two boxes for each student. The students can later change the sessions they attend but we want to see if some breakout sessions will have more than 100 attendees.

If you have any questions, contact us at socaljea@gmail.com

Thanks and hope to see you at Wake-Up Call!
