Community Conversation: Indigenous Identity and Popular Narratives
When viewed by outsiders, Alaska has many different descriptions: “the Last Frontier,” a place wild or untouched by man, or a piece of nature open for exploration. At the same time, Alaska Natives have inhabited this place for thousands of years and exist in every part of the state, their narratives often sidelined by colonial stories. As the popular conception and the lived reality of Alaska conflict, in what ways does the idea of Alaska and conversations about it accommodate or ignore Indigenous stories? Do narratives about Alaska properly recognize Indigenous histories, cultures, and epistemologies? What is missing from mainstream portrayals of Alaska and what processes of colonization create this absence? Join YWCA Alaska in discussing Alaska’s presence in the popular imagination and its consequences.
