Senior Visual Arts with Nina
This programme is on offer via distance and also runs in person classes on Thursdays as part of the HASCA Hub at the North Shore YMCA, 5 Akoranga Drive, Northcote. HASCA supported parent lead classes for Home Educating Families.

The course is also approved through Homeschooling NZ for credits towards the CENZ Certificate. Please contact Nina to discuss this option.

Students in this class must be aged 15 + or on a case by case basis mature & confident  14 year olds will be considered if they demonstrate readiness.

This class is for those with a bit of experience under their belt who would like to be extended and challenged through the use of new media techniques, artist models, and art-making ideas with year 11 - 12 content.

The aims of the course are to extend and enhance students drawing, painting and mixed media skills using established practices informed by artist studies.

In response to our artist studies, students will be guided in the production of a series of artworks experimenting in developing ideas using different colour palettes, media, subject matter and compositional techniques.

The Senior Fine Arts class (and Foundational class) are facilitated by a passionate home educating mother of 5. Full course content information, materials list, and art completed by past (and current) students can be seen by scrolling down. :)

For in person classes, please see https://hascanz.org/thursdays/ for HASCA HUB rules, venue map, and all other information.

Introducing Nina - Who I am and why I teach art
I am a passionate art lover and homeschooling mother of 5. I have been teaching these classes for going on 8 years. I studied art through school myself and have done a few art classes as an adult. Although I do not have any formal teaching qualifications in art myself, my students have achieved highly in NCEA Art ever year.

Initially my classes were designed to meet a need in my own daughter and some of her friends who were registered with Homeschooling NZ and using the ACE Curriculum. I designed the courses around the Cambridge IGCSE syllibus at the time but as time went by I started looking into how the course content could be adapted to align with NCEA to enable students to earn official recognition of their art via Te Kura. I contacted some senior teachers of art at local schools to pick their brains and also the senior teacher of art at Te Kura. After talking with them and undertaking some research of my own I put together a program that students could work through with NCEA assessments in mind. This open the door to some wonderful opportunities for students and saw them make huge achievements in their art.

The thing I love most about teaching art is seeing students find their artistic passion and pursue their artistic dreams. I love seeing them go from the initial early stages of learning the basics through to the days when their skillset far exceeds that of their teacher.

Over the past few years I have felt very proud watching students achieve incredible results in their art.

In 2018, 2019, and 2020 I saw all of my students working towards NCEA via Te Kura endorsed with Merits and Excellences in Levels 1, 2, and 3 Art and was thrilled to see some of them earn recognition of their high levels of achievement when they received awards for excellence and the top Te Kura student in NZ in the field of Art for their levels.

In 2020, it was wonderful to see one of my students spread her wings in level 3 NCEA Painting amidst all the chaos of covid lockdowns and be awarded an NZQA scholarship in art and be chosen for the NZQA Top Art exhibition as well as as being recognized  by Te Kura as their top level 3 art student for the whole of NZ.

In 2021, it was wonderful to see another student spread her wings when she was accepted into a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Whitecliffe School of Fine Arts.

These are the moments that make any teacher proud but when you spend years working closely with the students and see them progress from the beginning stages as a young teen through to being acknowledged as the talented artists they are, it is an amazing blessing that I and forever thankful to have been a part of.
Optional Extensions: NCEA & CENZ
For those who are interested in the possibility of earning credits for either NCEA or CENZ, support and preparation towards this will be provided..

Students who have opted to do NCEA in previous years have achieved very well with some being recognized for awards for high achievement.
Required Materials
SENIOR CLASS:
Senior students will need a new spiral-bound artbook at each level or an A3 clear file presentation folder and A3 Paper, plus the following:

Student Quality Acrylic paints 5 x 75ml pack containing 3 primary colours, black & white - (Derivan, Pebeo or Chromacryl brands)
At least 4 or 5 different sized synthetic paintbrushes
Glue stick & PVA glue
Scissors
Art Pencils minimum of: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B
Charcoal pencils S, M, H
Artist black Ink pens SF, F, C, B
Mouldable Eraser
A bottle of India Ink or if desired a higher quality artist ink
Coloured Pencils x 12+
Ruler
A3 Spiral bound Sketchbook or visual diary
A4 Cartridge acrylic paint  pad
Compressed Charcoal stick/s
Access to a digital or other camera

All students will need access to a computer with a printer for home use..

Level 2 and 3 students may also like to add the following optional extras to their kit... These are typically higher quality and more expensive materials which do admittedly achieve better results.
Oil paints
Different coloured charcoal pencils (Sepia, White, black, etc)
Water-soluble graphite pencil
Acrylic or wet strength Art paper. (Especially recommended for NCEA Level 2 and 3.)
Watercolour Pencils and/or wax-based coloured pencils

Important note: Please do not buy art materials from places like the $2 shop. They are poor quality and prove frustrating for students as they can not achieve the same outcomes with them as they can with better quality materials. The same goes for the red Faber Castel coloured pencils and lower quality children's paint. Ultimately poor quality materials achieve poor results

The best place to purchase art materials in NZ is from Gordon Harris Art Supplies.
