What is it?
DNS is necessary for the internet to function. It converts domains (e.g.
google.com) into IP addresses (e.g. 142.20.54.10). By filtering DNS queries, you can make unwanted domains unreachable. Block53 uses free open-source DNS software and is hosted by GPLS IT, so you can rest assured that your DNS traffic will not be monitored by outside sources. This service is provided at no cost to your library.
Why does it matter?
Filtered DNS has a range of benefits:
- Reduce the chances of phishing.
- Reduce the chances of a malware / ransomware infection.
- Optimize your library's bandwidth by removing unnecessary ads.
- Block known torrent sites (disclaimer: this does not block all torrent sites).
- Receive a report of any malicious requests from your library.
Is this service right for my library?
With Block53, you can:
- Change the categories to filter at any time.
- Submit additional domains to block (shared threat intelligence to benefit other libraries).
- Request the removal of a false positive.
- Stop using Block53 at any time.
How do I use Block53?
The implementation is simple: it requires changing 1 setting on your firewall or internal DNS server. GPLS IT can directly assist you with making the change.

Note: this is not a replacement for CIPA filtering, but can certainly be used in conjunction.
