Mr. Van Noy – 8th Grade Integrated Science Disclosure
Email: devannoy@wsd.net

Course Description:
Integrated science will cover four main topics; physics, chemistry, geology, and ecology.   The main theme of eighth grade integrated science is that there is a constant interaction of matter and energy in nature.  Students will be given the opportunity to observe, inquire, and question by participating in lab experiments and conducting scientific research.  This course will provide opportunities to showcase the skills and knowledge learned on a daily basis.

Classroom Expectations:
1) Be prepared and on time.  Each student will be expected to be in their seat and ready for instruction as soon as the bell rings.
2) Respect yourself, others, and lab equipment.  No put-downs are allowed in this class.  Students will be expected to respect the property of other students, the teacher and school property.
3) Follow directions the first time they are given.  The student should be respectful and mindful when listening to whoever is giving instruction/information.  This includes the teacher, announcements, and other student presentation.
4) Follow all safety rules.  If a student fails to follow correct safety procedures, the student will be immediately removed from the classroom/lab.

COVID - 19 Expectations:
All students will be required to wear a face mask.  (mandated by the Utah Health Department and Weber School District).
Students will be dismissed from class row by row.
Students will be expected to follow appropriate social distancing practices.
Students will go directly to their assigned seats.

Attendance, Tardies and Citizenship:
It is important that students obey school and classroom rules in order to maintain satisfactory citizenship!  If students do not comply, there will be a drop in citizenship.  The following will also be used in determining citizenship:
Four tardies=N, Five tardies=U. Check portal regularly.
Any student repeatedly causing classroom disruptions, breaking class or school rules, or bringing earbuds to class will receive a drop in citizenship. Students will be given one warning. After that, citizenship will drop. For warning notices, see progress report memos.
Students who are cheating (copying work, plagiarizing work, or aiding others in cheating) will receive a U in citizenship and an F on the assignment.

Required Materials:
A folder/binder used specifically for this class.  (You can keep this in my classroom).
Pen or pencil (blue or black preferred).
Chromebook

Assignments:
Assignments will be given each week and due dates will be posted in class and on my website.  More than likely assignments will be done in class, if students do not complete the task during the allotted class time, then it will become homework.  Assignments will be graded within a week of being turned in and recorded in the online grade book. Incomplete or sloppy assignments will be graded as a ZERO and returned to the student to REDO. This will also include tests.

If not turned in on time, the grade for the assignment will result in a zero until turned in.  Once turned in, it will be graded as it was turned in on time.  There is no reason a student can’t succeed in my class if they do the work and turn it in on time.
****I will accept late work  up until three days before midterm, and three days before the end of the term****

Attendance:
Many activities such as group projects, interaction with other students, labs, instructions, and videos are difficult, if not impossible, to make up. When an absence occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to collect all missed assignments and hand them in within seven school days of the absence.  Absent students will see that their scores show up as a zero with an absent mark.

Grade Scale:
Students should monitor their own grades/progress during the semester.  If a student believes that they have a different grade than my records show, it is much easier to handle the situation sooner versus the end of the term.

A
90-100%
B
80-89%
C
70-79%
D
60-69%
F
0-59%

**** Opportunities for extra credit may be offered throughout the semester, TBD****

Tests:
Tests will be given throughout the semester and are used as a way for you and me to see how well you have learned the material.  All tests can be retaken one time.  If you have retaken the test and still want to try for a better score, you will need to meet with me before or after school for tutoring before you can take the test a third time.

Electronic Devices:
Headphones/Earbuds will not be allowed in my classroom.  If I see them, they will be mine.  If we need to listen to sounds on the ChromeBook I will provide you with headphones.   Cell phone use will not be tolerated in the classroom.  They should remain unseen for the duration of the class.

Food and Drink:
Any type of food will NOT be allowed in my classroom.  If you are coming from CCA you can keep those items back by my desk until class is over.  If I see any other food related items I will throw them away.  Drinks will be permitted as long as they have a screw on cap, water can be in any container with a lid.  All others will be disposed of down the drain.

Hall Passes:
Students who consistently use hall passes miss important information and essential work time. Hall passes will be limited. If your student has a medical issue and needs to leave the classroom, please contact the counseling office for a medical pass. You will receive four hall pass coupon per term, they will be the responsibility of the student to keep track of.
