Youth Farmers Apprenticeship 2023 Application - NEW APPLICANTS
Thank you for your interest in Red Hook Farm's Youth Farmer apprenticeship. Red Hook Farms is a project of Red Hook Initiative. Please see below for an application checklist, plus more info about the program. Scroll down to start the application!

Applications must be submitted by February 1st. All new applicants must also submit a reference letter from an unrelated adult - coach, teacher, neighbor. See the link and more info at the end of the application. Reference letters are also due by February 1st.

We will be hosting an "application clinic" on January 24 from 3:30- 5:00 pm - if you would like some help filling out this application, access to a computer, or otherwise ask us questions, please come! Meet us at RHI, 767 Hicks Street.

APPLICATION CHECKLIST 
-  You must be currently enrolled in high school
-  You must LIVE or ATTEND SCHOOL in Red Hook, Brooklyn
-  First time applicants must include a reference letter (template provided at the end of the application)
-  Everyone must attend a group interview in February
Job Information + Requirements
Spring program runs from March 7 - June 17.

Work sessions are Tuesday and Thursday after school, and on Saturdays during the day.

Work sessions, including March training sessions, are mandatory for all apprentices.

Pay is $15/hour, paid by check or direct deposit every 2 weeks.

Must have valid working papers and be fully vaccinated by start date.
More Info about the Youth Farmers Program:
All Participants are paid Red Hook Initiative employees who are placed at the farms:
- Apprentices are hired for a three month position;
- During March, everyone participates in trainings on TUES + THURS (no Saturday work sessions in March);
- In April, we begin our in-person farm days at our two Red Hook farm sites;
- Apprentices who receive a positive evaluation at the end of spring will be invited to continue the apprenticeship for the summer;
- In the fall, some apprentices may be offered a position for an additional three months.

YF is a youth development program, as well as a job:
- Apprentices do a range of work at our two urban farm sites;
- Apprentices will also attend workshops, participate in team-building activities, and work to achieve personal and group goals;
- Apprentices must like being outdoors, doing physical work, and open to trying new things.

You don’t need to know anything about farming to apply to YF:
- We will train you on agriculture, carpentry, botany, and other topics to support your work on the farms.
- There will be experienced teen apprentices returning from previous seasons as well as adult farm staff working alongside you to support your learning and growth.

Reference Letter
All first time applicants MUST submit a reference letter. Your application is not complete until we receive this form - also due by 2/1. Click the link below to print out or share the reference form with your teacher, mentor, neighbor, coach, etc. Your reference cannot be related to you!

Once your reference has completed the letter, they can email it directly to joshua@rhicenter.org with the subject line: YOUR NAME + Reference Letter. They can also print it and give it back to you to bring in person to Red Hook Initiative: 767 Hicks Street.  At the front desk, ask for the FARM mailbox. If someone else who is currently in the program is referring you - you don't have to include a reference letter - they will be your reference!

Interview Schedule
All applicants must attend an IN PERSON group interview at the RHI office. Please select your preferred dates and times and we will schedule your email accordingly. Expect the interviews to last 30-45 minutes; you will be grouped with 2-3 other applicants for the interview.
