Lincoln Home Brick

In 1844, Abraham Lincoln bought the only home he would ever own. It was the home in Springfield, Illinois where he, Mary, and their boys would live until Lincoln was elected President in 1860. Now a National Historic Site operated by the National Parks Service, thousands flock to the Illinois state capital every year to see the home that the Lincoln family lived in.

In 1954, preservation work was done on the historic home. During the process of renovation work on the house's foundation, several original bricks were removed and replaced. The original bricks were retained by the masonry contractor who cut them down in size and offered them for sale in 1958. Up for auction is one of those brick pieces.

The brick measures approximately 1.5" x 0.75 x 0.5". It is affixed to a decorative card which states "Original Brick / from the home of / Abraham Lincoln" along with a stamp that notes this as being "Brick No. 2553". This card is accompanied by a smaller note containing a copy of the notarized provenance from the contractor who worked on the house. The card on which the brick is affixed has been folded and bent in different places. Please see the pictures below for more on its condition.

Don't pass up this opportunity to own a piece of Lincoln's home. It would make a great gift for the Lincoln fan in your life.
