THE APPLICATION PERIOD HAS ENDED. ANY FURTHER SUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
Thank you for you interest, and please consider applying in Spring 2020!
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The department relies on our interns to keep the gallery open. In return you will earn credits while learning about: how art exhibitions are put together, experiencing the day-to-day functioning of an art gallery, working with professional curators and artists, helping create an artist-run outdoor gallery (Platform), and running a small, non-circulating art library.
Internships are open to ALL UC Berkeley Students, NOT limited to Art Practice majors or upper division students. The application process is competitive.
DEADLINE
The deadline for applications is 12 noon, Thursday, August 29th, 2019. It is strongly recommended that applicants wait until their Fall schedule is finalized before submitting this form. Please re-submit if your schedule changes.
ENROLLMENT
The internship is a one to three credit pass/fail course. Attendance and punctuality are essential to passing. All interns must be available for weekly Monday meetings from 12:10-1pm.
Students are asked to take the Art Practice Internship Program for at least two credits and play two roles: Attendant/Host/Event Coordinator and Preparator/Publicity. Students should expect to commit five hours per week to the program.
Students may ALSO apply to participate in the Art Library Internship Program for one credit, and can expect to commit 2.5 hours per week. Students may apply for and participate in both internship programs, or just one.
PARTICIPATION ROLES
Attendant/Host/Event Coordinator
Each student who signs up for the Art Gallery Internship Program is required to be present to attend the gallery or Platform art space for one 2.5 hour shift per week during the semester OR help host receptions and artist talks. Attendant shifts are scheduled during gallery hours, 12 – 5pm, Monday - Thursday. Event coordinators at Platform art space shifts are 11:00am-1:30pm, Monday - Thursday. Host shifts are on Wednesdays when there is an opening (see form for details).
Platform is a brand new outdoor art space that focuses on collaborative art projects, events, and workshops. Students interested in participating as Event Coordinators should be available to help with at least one 2.5 hour shift per week. Event coordinators open the Platform space at lunchtime, assist with artist workshops and events, and close up the space after their shift. Event Coordinator shifts are scheduled Mondays - Thursdays from 11am-1:30pm. Alternately, Event Coordinators can choose to help with evening or weekend events, depending on schedule (changes weekly).

Additionally, each gallery intern takes on two specialized positions. These positions are scheduled flexibly, but do require students to be present for hours during installation periods and at meetings with the director.
As a Preparator you will be installing exhibitions for 4-hour shifts before each of five exhibitions. You will be hanging work, painting, organizing, making gallery materials, assisting professional and student artists, and will gain valuable hands-on experience. You will be trained in the use of basic tools used to install exhibitions. No experience required.
As a Publicity Interns you will help the director prepare PR materials, publicize events, document exhibitions, enter exhibition descriptions into online arts calendars, contact local arts media, prepare content for our website and social media, and make things BIG.
Art Library Project
The Art Library Project is a small, non-circulating art library within the Worth Ryder Art Gallery. Students interested in working as Art Librarians may apply to participate in the Art Library Project Internship Program for one credit. Students may apply for and participate in both internship programs, or just one.

I will review the applications and notify you of my decision by Monday, September 2nd. Selected interns will be sent schedule and registration information.
Admission is competitive. Shifts are assigned based on your experience and availability in our schedule. The earlier you return this form, the easier it will be to get your shift. Program Director decisions are final.
I look forward to reviewing your applications!

Director, Worth Ryder Art Gallery
