SOUND OF PRIDE CHORUS INFORMATION FOR NEW STUDENTS
One of the most wonderful opportunities in which your child will have in the sixth grade at Central Middle School this year will be the participation in our beginning chorus program. Participation in music, specifically chorus, has many advantages for a student. Statistics show that students who participate in choral music score higher on SAT Tests and almost all standardized tests than those students who do not. Surveys also show that students who were involved in choral programs have a higher acceptance rate into college and even medical school! Students in our program often comment that chorus has taught them time management, commitment, hard work, and self-motivation. These skills have been a huge factor in the accomplishments our students have earned both on and off the concert stage.

Your child does not need to have any prior knowledge of music or already know how to sing to start chorus. All of the basic fundamentals of music reading and counting are concentrated upon during the chorus classes. During the first few weeks, the students will learn the basic fundamentals of reading music and then get to sing for the teacher in order to decide on vocal placement which they will have the most success. A concern of some parents of participating in chorus is time. Chorus meets as a class during the regular school day at the middle school. They will not miss another class to be in chorus. Students are able to be in chorus and still participate in other activities as well. Most of our chorus members at Central Middle School are actively involved in many sports, including, football, softball, baseball, cheerleading, track, basketball, soccer, tennis, etc. Many of them are also involved in school clubs and other school and community activities.

Our middle school chorus has a tradition of excellence with Superior rated performances for many years. For the remainder of the school year, our sixth grade chorus will be performing for a concert festival that includes spending a day in Chattanooga, TN, and our seventh and eighth grade chorus will perform for a concert festival in Tennessee at Dollywood theme park! The students in Central Middle School have a great deal of pride and dedication to their chorus, school, and community, and are very proud to have the finest chorus programs in all of Carroll County and of the finest in the United States.
If you wish to enroll your child in the beginning chorus for the 6th grade, make sure to fill out the required information and returned to Dr. Smith as soon as possible. There will be a chorus fee of $50.00 (due in September) which helps to cover the cost of the chorus shirt, transportation fees, and music fees. If this is a problem, we can work something out or even try to find a sponsor. The form must be returned (fax, email, or at the school) no later than August 12th for your child to be registered in the chorus class.

If you have any questions regarding your child’s participation in the CMS Sound of Pride Chorus, please email me at scott.smith@carrollcountyschools.com or by calling me at 770-832-8114. We look forward to having your student join the excitement of the Central Middle School Sound of Pride Chorus.
