Trout in the Classroom is a collaboration between Trout Unlimited and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Over a semester, teachers and students raise trout and release them into local waterways. Classrooms become a place to explore the life cycle of trout, water quality and conservation. Teachers use a customizable interdisciplinary curriculum to fit their students' grade levels and interests.
Why Trout in the Classroom?
- TIC is an opportunity to engage students in hands-on STEM activities that expose students to their natural environment and STEM careers
- TIC is a turnkey program that educators can easily implement in the classroom and TIC provides troubleshooting, an online community, and manuals to support educators
- TIC is currently active in 33 states across the country, and over 100,000 students participate in the program annually
How does a school get involved?
- Seek approval from your school administration
- Contact TIC State Coordinator at the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD)
- Order Equipment and eggs
- Review curriculum
- Receive equipment and eggs
- Start raising trout in your classroom!
Costs and Equipment:
- Trout in the Classroom initial equipment costs $1,700 per classroom set
- The annual cost of the program is approximately $200 per classroom
- Grants will be available for participating program
Additional Details:
- Trout Unlimited provides written manuals and video tutorials on how to set up and care for the tanks
- Trout Unlimited facilitates an online community with tank and fish health troubleshooting
