Diverting Food Waste
We are looking to gauge New Bedford and Dartmouth residents' opinions on possible future programs for diverting food waste from the landfill. Food waste is the largest portion of our trash and can be diverted from the landfill to make compost to enrich the soil.

The Greater New Bedford Regional Refuse Management District is conducting the survey.

1. We're considering accepting food waste at the transfer station/recycling center. There would be a dedicated container in which residents place food waste either loose or in special compostable bags. The program would include meat, bones, fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, and coffee grounds. Would you take food waste from your home to the transfer station/recycling center?   *

2. Would you take food waste from your home to the transfer station/recycling center if you were offered a free kitchen counter bin and a limited supply of compostable bags to line the bin?                                                   *

3. Another option we're considering is curbside collection of food waste. Residents would pay a business directly for the service. Food waste would be placed in a kitchen counter bin which would be emptied into a small cart and set at the curb for collection. The kitchen counter bin and/or the cart could be lined with a compostable bag. A start up kit would be provided at no cost and would include the small cart, kitchen counter bin and a limited supply of compostable bags. The program would include meat, bones, fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, and coffee grounds. Would you be interested in participating? *

5. Would you be willing to pay $89 for 6 months of every other week curbside collection service (equal to $6.85 per pickup)? *
6. Do you compost food waste at home with a compost bin? *
7. What city/town do you live in? *
8. Do you have comments on the options mentioned above or suggestions for diverting food waste from our local landfill?
9. If you're interested in either drop-off or curbside pickup of food waste, please share your email and we can reach out if we move forward with the programs.
