Come visit Jaspal Birdi’s solo exhibition Eyes Looking Without Seeing at the Women’s Art Association of Canada (WAAC), Dignam Gallery in Toronto, Ontario.
Using smartphones, laser printers, and paint, Jaspal Birdi creates large photo-based works full of colour, technical glitches, and specks of space blanket gold. Her works explore the nature of memory—shaped by physical and virtual realities—and the potential for audience reinterpretation.
In this exhibition, Jaspal Birdi presents works on paper, thermal blankets, canvas, and in augmented reality. Particularly curious in the ways that cultural diversity is layered, Jaspal Birdi stages Eyes Looking Without Seeing in a manner that encourages visitors to sit, talk, draw, and write within the typical 19th century Toronto home that is Dignam Gallery. This exhibition will invite you to actively reinterpret the works on display by revisiting your personal stories and histories of coming to, growing up, and living in Ontario.
Eyes Looking Without Seeing marks the end of Jaspal Birdi’s year-long artist residency at the Women’s Art Association of Canada. A program that is now in its third year, and made possible thanks to an endowment in memory of former WAAC member and artist Barbara Feith. WAAC acknowledges generous support from Pusateri's in sponsoring the opening night of Jaspal Birdi’s solo exhibition. Jaspal Birdi acknowledges support from the Ontario Arts Council and the City of Brampton for assisting in the realization of this project.
