In rowing, coxswains have many responsibilities. Coxswains are in charge of their boat and need to direct their crew at all times, on and off the water. During practice, coxswains are in charge of steering the boat, giving the rowers instructions and commands while rowing, and improving the coordination and rhythm of the boat by making calls. During races, coxswains do all of these things as well as motivate their crew and help the rowers execute the race plan.
