UREDI: Undergraduate Research Experience for Diversity at IBS Mentor Application
PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM
IBS is strongly committed to supporting undergraduate research and experiential learning, particularly that aimed at training and mentoring of BIPOC, women, queer, first-generation, or other students from historically-marginalized groups under-represented in social and behavioral science.  For this purpose, we established the UREDI RESEARCH PROGRAM (i.e., the one pertaining this application, only open for students accepted into it, and for which students receive pay) as well as its sister UREDI TRAINING PROGRAM (open to any and all CU undergraduate students interested in learning more about the practice of research, and which requires no application and has no cost or pay).

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
Students accepted into the UREDI RESEARCH PROGRAM will be 1) paired with an IBS researcher to work on one of their projects; 2) STRONGLY expected to participate in monthly mentoring/professionalization sessions; and 3) expected to attend monthly training workshops that are part of the UREDI TRAINING PROGRAM. UREDI RESEARCH PROGRAM students will be paid for their time devoted to both research projects as well as for the monthly professionalization/training sessions they attend (i.e., including those in the UREDI TRAINING PROGRAM). Pay will be on an hourly basis at $15 per hour. We also encourage students to apply for work-study before applying to the program or otherwise as soon as the work-study application opens. However, eligibility for work-study or getting those funds is not a requirement of the UREDI RESEARCH PROGRAM and will not be used as a criterion to select students into it. Further, we appreciate and encourage any additional support from researchers' grants and other funds.

Accepted students generally need to commit to working a minimum of 80 hours during their appointment but which could be extended to 120 hours by the program, or further if the researcher they are working with has additional funds and needs continued assistance. Appointments can be for Spring only or extend beyond the Spring semester, into Summer and/or Fall depending on student AND mentor availability. The timing of how many hours students will need to devote to the program and over how many weeks will be negotiated between student and researcher, with the UREDI committee helping as needed.

Duties assigned to students may include data collection, entry,  cleaning, and/or analysis, as well as assisting with literature reviews or other duties related to the execution of a research project. Basic administrative work or tasks ancillary to the practice of research should not be major features of a student's appointment.

HOW WE WILL SELECT PARTICIPANTS.
A Review Committee will select mentors and students based on the competitiveness of their applications AND how well students pair with the projects submitted by IBS researchers. We welcome requests from mentors to work with particular students that best meet the criteria of the program (see student application for more details, https://forms.gle/pyjGQUUN1S8gbMjE7).  In cases where students or researchers do not mention specific people, the Review Committee will try to match students to mentors by providing selected mentors with a short list of students to consider/interview. Mentors will have the last word on whether they are willing to work with specific students.

For graduate students interested in becoming mentors. At the moment, we are only allowing doctoral candidates to apply to be primary mentors, but welcome teams of IBS faculty, research faculty, research staff, and graduate students applying for these funds. As such, if you are not a doctoral candidate, please have an eligible individual in the team be the primary applicant.

Throughout the program, Undergraduate Researchers and Mentors will be able to mutually reassess the Mentor/Undergraduate Researcher/Project match, with the input of the UREDI Review Committee if needed.

HOW TO APPLY

IBS UREDI Program Responsibilities
1. The UREDI program provides support for paid undergraduate student research assistants’ salary during the Academic Year and/or Summer, depending on researcher & student availability. Additional hours may be paid by researchers from their own research funds, including some internal campus competitions that encourage research collaboration with undergraduate students (e.g., UROP, CARTSS).

2. The UREDI program will also organize and host sessions on professionalization/mentoring for UREDI RESEARCH Program participants, training sessions for UREDI RESEARCH AND TRAINING PROGRAM participants, and mentoring training and mentoring resources for mentors.

3. The UREDI coordinators (DEI & Training committees) and the IBS DEI Director are committed to assisting the UREDI Undergraduate Researchers and their Mentors as needed with potential issues that may arise.
UREDI Undergraduate Researcher Responsibilities  (just so you are aware of them)
1. Attend scheduled meetings with their Mentor and research team, and occasional meetings with the DEI Director as needed. Being responsive on email to communication about the project and being proactive in terms of trying to find solutions to anything related to the research project.

2. Attend at least two scheduled UREDI RESEARCH PROGRAM professionalization meetings per semester or at least one meeting in Summer.

3. For appointments running during the Academic Year, participate in at least two UREDI TRAINING PROGRAM sessions.

4. Commitment to working within the UREDI RESEARCH PROGRAM for at least one semester or, if during Summer, for at least 8 weeks during Summer.

5. Participation in at least one session per year showcasing some of the research done during the Program.
UREDI Mentor Responsibilities
1. Mentor the UREDI Undergraduate Researcher, which includes meeting at least every other week with the student and if applicable, including the student in research team meetings.

2. Attend or participate in one UREDI Mentor Training (to be scheduled) and/or use any resources to better establish the mentoring of students. SHOULD WE INCLUDE A BOILERPLATE MENTORING AGREEMENT THAT BOTH MENTORS AND STUDENTS SHOULD SIGN?

3. Commitment to provide at least one semester (or, if in Summer, 8 weeks) of relevant research work for an undergraduate research assistant.

4. Commitment to encourage the UREDI student to attend both UREDI RESEARCH PROGRAM and UREDI TRAINING PROGRAM sessions. Note that students will get paid for attending these sessions (which will take a total of 2-8 hours depending on how many sessions students attend) so you will need to sign off on those as part of their hourly work. We will earmark resources to pay for these sessions so that those hours logged do not affect the total number of hours allotted to the student to work with you.

5. Attendance and active participation in at least one annual session aimed at showcasing some of the research done with the student participant(s).
