The Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor is accepting volunteers for its 2024 community oyster gardening season! As a volunteer, you will be able to participate in raising juvenile spat-on-shell oysters from July through September by cleaning the cages and tracking oyster growth over time until they are released in protected restoration areas.
This form is for participation at our publicly located oyster gardening sites (Tappen Marina and North Hempstead Beach Park). You are welcome to sign up at either, regardless of your town of residence.
(Please note that if you are a member of the Hempstead Harbour Club or Sea Cliff Yacht Club and are looking to volunteer there, you will receive a separate form!)
Once you sign up here, you will receive an email as soon as possible regarding the details of the brief volunteer training presentation, which will take place in June. All participants are required to attend this presentation. There, you'll learn the basics of oyster biology, get guidance on specific volunteer responsibilities, and hear about important health and safety information.
A waiver for participation and photo release will be sent to you once you submit this questionnaire, it must be signed and submitted prior to the training session in June.
Additionally, you will be informed about the schedules for the biweekly (that is, every other week) volunteer sessions once they are determined for each site.
Important: Any child age 13 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
