Syriac Transcribathon 2024
Applications for participation

WHAT: The Princeton MARBAS initiative and the ERC MiDRASH project are organizing a hybrid transcribathon on Syriac manuscripts. Data produced will be open source and freely shared as far as image rights permit.

HOW: We will be working to produce a sufficient quantity of transcriptions for manuscript images in order to support the training of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) computer models for Syriac, which can be used to automatically produce text from manuscript images. Familiarity with technical tools is not required. We will have tasks like layout classification, manual layout segmentation annotation, automatic layout segmentation correction, manual transcription, correction of automatic transcription, catalogue enrichment, and application of automatic pipelines for alignment.

WHEN: 25-28 March, 2024.

WHERE: Participation remote or in person in Princeton (food will be provided for accepted applicants).

DEADLINE: CLOSED for in-person registration; registration remains OPEN for remote registration

Organized by
Christine Roughan (U Princeton), George Kiraz (IAS, U Princeton, Beth Mardutho), Daniel Stökl Ben Ezra (AOrOc, EPHE-PSL)
