The Program aims to explore an efficient and cost-effective method to collect food waste from the residential sectors, especially for the single block buildings and the estates without any food waste collection experience in Hong Kong.
We will drive a 5.5-ton truck with a smart food waste bin installed and travel around 10 locations in some districts at night to collect residential food waste. The truck will stay around 20-30 minutes per location and wait for the participants to dispose the source-separated food waste into the smart bin. The food waste collected will be delivered to O.Park1 in Lantau Island to turn into electricity and compost. The Program will also involve a series of promotion to attract more participants and increase the food waste recycling rate.
The Program fills the gap of the existing policies in recycling residential food waste. Also, it minimises the concerns and oppositions from various stakeholders, such as the management companies, residential organisations, individuals, which leads to high difficulty to kick start a food waste collection service for residential buildings.
If the Program is approved and funded by the Recycling Fund, the program period is expected to be 2 years, starting from early 2023. During the Program period, the food waste collection service will be free-of-charge.
The Program details are subject to change for improvement.
