Session 3: Saturday, March 16- 1:00-3:00
Where: CUNY Grad Center, 365 5th Ave
Who: You, and other informal and formal leaders in MORE!
What:
Session 1: Principles of Restorative v. Punitive Practices
Session 2: Restorative and Non-Hierarchical Meetings and Spaces
Session 3: Restorative Approaches to Conflict
Why: We believe that by building a shared vocabulary and understanding around restorative principles and practices, we can make our MORE spaces even more welcoming, democratic, encouraging, and help our leadership and our organization grow. Contentious interactions, conflict between members, and conflict between leadership and members have presented challenges for MORE's organizing in the past, including around issues like police free schools, Israel/Palestine organizing, and participation in election coalitions. We need ways to handle our political and interpersonal differences collaboratively to go beyond the culture of disposability and silencing that characterizes the Unity Caucus. If part of our goal as a caucus is to transform the culture and practices of our union, then a crucial part of the method is to reflect upon and transform the culture and practices of our caucus. This relates both to how we build community and how we handle conflict.
