WRITING ABOUT DIFFERENCES

Writing about groups of people and understanding how to tell a meaningful story and what language to use is difficult when including race, ethnicity, social class, disability, gender, or sexual orientation.  How do we avoid perpetuating stereotypes or write outside of one's experiences?  What type of research is needed, and where do we find the resources?  How do we accurately write about cultural experiences when we don't identify with that culture?

Language evolution, the writer's purpose, the audience, and limited exposure can all be complicating factors.  As writers, we are responsible for the content we include in our written pieces.  Join Ann Fields, William Ledbetter, Alex Temblador, and DAWG to explore these topics and discuss writing about differences.

William is a science fiction author with thirty years of experience as a mechanical designer in the aerospace industry, including work on the International Space Station radiator system. He is an Nebula award-winning author with more than seventy speculative fiction stories and non-fiction articles published in four languages. Alex is an author and travel, arts, and culture writer whose works have appeared in Architectural Digest, Travel + Leisure, Dallas Morning News, and D Magazine. She is the author of stories about Mexican-American/Chicano heritage, strong characters, and diverse identities. Her award-winning novel, Secrets of the Casa Rosada, was published by Arte Publico Press in 2018. Her second novel, Half Outlaw, is expected to be published in 2022.
