"It's Alive. It's ALIVE!"

Freeroam Theatre presents Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a production that blends two narratives together; the ambitious scientist Victor Frankenstein and ingenious author Mary Shelly, as obsession takes hold of the pair. While Frankenstein works relentlessly and eventually succeeds in his quest to play God, Shelley struggles with the weight of writing the ultimate horror story, one that the world has never seen before. Will ambition be their salvation? Or will their creations rise to destroy all they know?

Rona Munro's adaptation of the classic novel explores the literary struggles of a young woman discovering her own reflection through the monsters the has created. Combine this with Freeroam's exciting style of embracing modern technologies and perspectives (much like the original text!), and with a dash of gothic horror; you will bare witness to theatre that will electrify, terrify and astound.

"Are you sitting comfortably? Good. We'll fix that. NOW IT BEGINS!"

Character Roles
Mary Shelley: As a writer and one of the protagonists of this story, she is frantically trying to piece her thoughts and ideas together to create the novel 'Frankenstein'. She is in control of the action that happens on stage and her actions are often reflected in Victor Frankenstein.

Victor Frankenstein: Frankenstein is the other protagonist of this story, mirroring Shelley's frantic behaviour. He obsesses over creating life through science. His relentless work eventually comes to fruition. What he has made however, is against God. A monster. And now he must face the consequences of his actions.

The Monster: Created by Frankenstein, the monster is grotesque looking but sensitive and misunderstood. In an attempt to integrate himself into society he is abused and shunned. His feeling of abandonment compels him to seek revenge against his creator.

Elizabeth/Safie:
  • Elizabeth is Victor's cousin and betrothed. She was taken in by the Frankenstein family as an orphan and raised with Victor.
  • Safie is a Turkish woman who has escaped abuse. She is in love with Felix.
Henry/ Walton/Felix/William:
  • Henry is Frankenstein's boyhood friend, who nurses Victor back to health in Ingolstadt.
  • Walton is the ship's captain and explorer seen at the beginning and end of the play.
  • Felix is from a poor family, escaping genocide. He is the son of Peter, and is in love with Safie.
  • William is Frankenstein's young brother.
Master/Father/Peter/Waldman:
  • Master is the master of the exploration ship as seen in the beginning and the end of the play.
  • Father is Frankenstein's father.
  • Peter is an old blind man from a poor background, the father of Felix and Agatha.
  • Waldman is Frankenstein's professor. He has dabbled in some untamed science himself, and guides Frankenstein through his experiments.
Mother/Justine/Agatha:
  • Mother is the mother of Frankenstein.
  • Justine is a maid in the Frankenstein household. She grew up and was educated beside Frankenstein, Henry and Elizabeth and is well loved by all.
  • Agatha is from a poor family and is the daughter of Peter.
