In lieu of a traditional recommendation letter, please honestly respond to the following categories / prompts.
1. Reflective Reader
Student readers should be able to clearly express their opinions about the books that are read and have the confidence to stand behind their opinion even if it is in the minority (something even most adults would struggle to do!). i.e. Will he or  she be confident enough to voice and support his/her opinions among a group of adult librarians/teachers or will he or she be intimidated?  Can he or she develop strong opinions and back them up with specific details from the book? Will he or she be discerning enough to not just "like" or "hate" every book but rather to deeply consider why he or she likes/dislikes a particular title and will he or she articulate the reasoning well?
Please write below to let us know how the student you are recommending reflects and responds as a reader. *
2. Responsibility / Time Committment
Student readers need to be mature, responsible, and able to handle a large time commitment to the book award over the next year. The  High School Committee will read approximately 60-80 books from January till November, meet 3-5 times, and occasionally discuss books via a wiki or blog between meetings.  i.e. Will he or she be able to handle the time commitment of the meetings and all of the reading involved? Does he or she have so many other commitments and extracurriculars that Nutmeg would fall to the bottom of his/her list? Will he or she get tired of reading the books and give up part way through the process? Does he or she have parents that will provide transportation to all of the meetings (sometimes an hour away)?
Please write below to let us know how you think the student you are recommending would handle this responsibility & time commitment. *
3. Open to new genres / opinions / content
Student readers need to be open to reading genres that may be outside what they typically read. They should be open -minded when hearing the opinions of others and what other readers may enjoy reading. i.e. Can he or she successfully read across genres or is he or she so drawn to a particular genre that other books will not be considered? Will he or she be upset if a book has some disturbing/mature content?  Does he or she hold extremely strong beliefs (religious, cultural, political etc.) that might influence his or her opinion or negatively influence his or her ability to give a book a fair reading? Can he or she give a book enough of a try to get through most of it,  even if he or she doesn't like it?

Please respond below to let us know to what extent you believe the student you are recommending will be open to new genres, ideas, or opinions. *
Is there anything else you would like us to know about the student you are recommending?
