Mentor Signup for EECS - GAAP 2021
The EECS Graduate Application Assistance Program (GAAP) is a student-run, volunteer-based program which provides assistance to EECS PhD applicants from underrepresented groups, including students from groups underrepresented in STEM and students with non-traditional academic backgrounds.

Applicants will be paired with a current graduate student who can guide them through the EECS PhD graduate application process, including feedback on the statement of purpose.

We invite you to volunteer as a Mentor! Mentors will support and assist EECS applicants through the application process. Mentorship provides an opportunity to use your hard-earned knowledge to make a significant impact on these underrepresented applicants. A one-time training will be held so that all volunteers know what the department is looking for and are equipped with the tools to improve applications.

The initial deadline to apply to become a Mentor was Sept 1, but we welcome late applicants as well -- if you're just seeing this, feel free to fill out the form then reach out to eecsgaap@mit.edu to make sure we send you the appropriate on-boarding/training info.

Mentors should be available to work with their mentee(s) over the period Sept 15 - Dec 1.

Note: This is a volunteer position. Last year, we were able to compensate mentors with $75/mentee for their efforts because of a generous donation. We cannot guarantee the same this year.

GAAP assists underrepresented students belonging to at least one of our 6 pre-defined categories (low income, first generation, URM, gender minority, LGBTQIA+, and students with disabilities). If you prefer to support students who identify in a particular way within these categories, please let us know, and indicate how heavily each identity preference should be considered when matching you. Examples:  e.g., “Hispanic (slight preference)” or “First generation (strong preference)” or “Black (strong preference), woman (slight preference)”  We strive to respect mentor preferences as often as possible, because your investment in and connection to your mentees improves the experience for everyone! Unfortunately, we cannot offer any guarantees.
***Note:**** All mentees are asked about whether we can use their demographic information during the matching process; only those who have opted in will be considered on these criteria. If you do not provide any preferences here, no identity information will be considered in your potential matches.  ***Note:*** These identity criteria are one of many factors (research area, PI overlap, shared experiences) that are used when matching mentors/mentees.
