By signing onto this letter, you are advocating for leaders of the City of Bridgeport, the Bridgeport Board of Education, and the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the Department of Administrative Services, the Department of Transportation, to halt the construction of Bassick High School in its currently proposed location at 115 Broad Street, Bridgeport, CT and evaluate alternative locations for the following reasons:
1) The new high school would be built in a FEMA designated Special Flood Hazard Area on the Long Island Sound coast leaving it particularly vulnerable to sea level rise and climate disasters;
2) neither the City Environmental Impact Study (EIS) nor the State Environmental Impact Evaluation (EIE) were conducted on the basis of loopholes excusing this injustice;
3) there were no public hearings for residents, students or teachers to voice their concerns; and
4) the school would be in walking distance of Bridgeport’s Harbor Station 5 (PSEG), Bridgeport Energy LLC (Cogentrix) (both are DEEP EJ designated (Air) Affecting Facilities), and two NuPower hydrogen fuel cells, all of which are fossil fuel (aka natural gas) based energy plants
We are seeking residents, students, teachers, staff, and organizations to sign on to this letter in solidarity by Monday, December 5th!
