Ministry Thornings are a constructive ministry evaluation designed to help provide healthy feedback on ministry productivity. I have learned that you cannot manage what you do not measure and you cannot enhance what you do not evaluate. In 2 Corinthians 12, particularly verse 7, Paul is given a thorn in his flesh to keep him humble and bring balance to his God given revelation. I believe this model of “Thorns” may be an effective way to grow in ministry.
Here's the process:
1. The person being evaluated sits in the middle of a small group. They are being thorned.
2. The thorned person in the middle then explains who they are and what they do or what the assignment/project may be. THEN THEY ARE TO BE SILENT UNTIL THE END OF THE ACTIVITY.
3. The group then takes turns FIRST providing positive feedback on the person. (person is still silent)
4. Then the group gives constructive critique of the persons productivity.
5. Finally the group ends with suggestions on how to move forward, and positive feedback.
6. Thorning ends after each person has spoken, then the “Thorned” person can share how they will use the feedback going forward. Trying not DEFEND, but rather provide some explanation on how to use the feedback going forward. Defending is only allowed if someone ask a direct question to the “Thorned” at the end of the activity.
